Lent is the longest and most penitential season of the church’s year of grace. It is the time when we are called to prepare for the most important events in the life of Jesus Christ: His sacred Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Our penitential season runs from Ash Wednesday to the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday begins Holy Week.
The sacred three days of the Lord’s Passover, called the Triduum, begins with the evening Mass on Holy Thursday which memorializes the Lord’s passion and death on Good Friday, reaching its high point in the Easter Vigil.
ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAY- are days of fast and abstinence. Adults between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are limited to one full meatless meal and two small meatless meals on these days.
ALL FRIDAYS IN LENT ARE DAYS OF ABSTINENCE. All who have reached their fourteenth year through their 59th year are bound to abstain from eating meat.
EASTER DUTY OBLIGATION:
Having received their First Holy Communion, every Catholic is bound to receive Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept should to be fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are also bound to confess all serious sins at least once a year.
