Legion of Mary
About
The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of the laity in the Catholic Church, with over 3 million active members in over 160 countries worldwide. The Legion of Mary has been approved by 7 Popes, and, was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council.
The object of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the sanctification of its members. Legionnaires become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a life of prayer, frequent reception of the sacraments, apostolic work done in union with Mary, under the guidance of a priest. The Legion of Mary is, in essence, an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor.

To learn more about the Legion of Mary, the first step is to be a guest at one of our meetings. Guests are always welcome and may go on one of the work assignments with an experienced legionnaire if they choose.
The Legion of Mary began in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921, the eve of the Feast of Our Lady’s Nativity, and, is now in every country of the world!
- To grow in holiness and fulfill our baptismal responsibilities
- Mobilize the Catholic laity
- To raise the spiritual level of the entire community through direct contact with, and, interest in every member and potential member of the Mystical Body of Christ.
- To accomplish this through Mary, Mother of All Souls and Mediatrix of All Grace.
There are two types of membership: Active and Auxiliary (praying) membership. Active members must attend a weekly meeting and perform a weekly work obligation of at least two hours per week assigned at the meeting.
Who May Belong
The Legion of Mary is open to all Catholics who faithfully practice their religion and are animated by the desire to fulfill their role in the Church’s apostolate through membership of the Legion; are prepared to fulfill each and every duty which active membership of the Legion involves. Persons who wish to join must apply for membership in a praesidium” (Handbook, page 80.) Senior members must be 18 years of age. Junior members are those under 18.
- Regular and punctual attendance at the weekly meeting.
- Performance of the 2 hour weekly apostolic work obligation assigned with another legion member. This work is selected by the priest and assigned by the President at the meeting.
- To recite the Legion prayer, the Catena (Magnificat), daily.
- To follow the system of the Legion according to its official Handbook.
